Lakeway CASA's Inaugural Hike-a-thon

Help us raise funds and awareness of CASA through our first ever Hike for CASA event.  This virtual event challenges participants to hike, walk or bike as many trails/miles as possible during the month of October to raise funds for our program which recruits, trains and supports community members to serve as court-appointed volunteer advocates for abused and neglected children in Sevier, Hamblen and Jefferson counties.  In the spirit of the mountains that surround the communities we serve, we invite you to get outside and enjoy the wonderful nature found in our own backyard!

VIRTUAL HIKE STEPS

We need your help!    

As children begin to go back to the in-person school setting, we expect a huge increase in the number of reports of child abuse and neglect.  In anticipation of this, we are ramping up our volunteer numbers so that we are prepared for this increase.

"COVID-19 has created a perfect storm of factors that will almost certainly lead to a sharp increase in unreported cases of child abuse and neglect, as children are cut off from interactions with professionals and teachers, confined at home with caregivers and relatives, and families are feeling the stress of job loss and economic uncertainty.  The nation's system of detecting abuse and neglect, which is heavily dependent on reports by teachers, doctors, and other professionals, is rendered almost completely powerless in this situation as in-person and face-to-face interactions between children and professionals are being minimized by the stay-at-home orders issued in most states. - Morgan Welch and Ron Haskins for the Brookings Institute (What COVID-19 means for America's child welfare system, 2020).
